The vast plains of Nebraska hide an intriguing energy story. In 2022, the voracious industrial & agricultural sector accounted for 39% of electricity retail sales. This power—in part—helps to keep Nebraska’s extensive irrigation network alive. The state still runs on coal (49% of its total in-state electricity net generation in 2022), but new grants from the Rural Energy for America Program are pumping money into renewable energy systems. Wind is popular, solar is controversial, and nuclear remains an option. To keep crops growing amidst the extremes of climate change, the state needs innovative thinking.
If you’re interested in working in the Cornhusker State, have a look at the offerings in our NE energy listings. There are plenty of AAS and certificate options for aspiring technicians. Anyone leaning towards engineering should also take a moment to chat to faculty who are working on Energy Materials and Energy Systems research within UNL’s College of Engineering. UNL even funds the Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research (NCESR), which offers summer internships to undergraduates.
