If there’s one that Nevada has a lot of, it’s sunshine. That’s probably why it’s home to 100,000+ solar installations. In 2022, solar provided 23% of the state’s power needs, making it the top source for renewable energy. It’s also one of the few states to dig deep into the possibilities of geothermal energy. According to the Nevada Division of Minerals, electrical generation capacity from Nevada’s geothermal plants is second only to California. And right on the border with Arizona stands the Hoover Dam.
What does this mean for Nevada energy students? Opportunity. As the state’s reliance on natural gas declines, exciting avenues are opening up in 21st century technologies. For proof, check out UNLV’s solar-focused Center for Energy Research (CER) and the renewable & sustainable energy research being conducted within UNR’s Department of Electrical & Biomedical Engineering. You’ll discover work on PV products & systems, smart grids, wind turbines, and more.
