All Energy Degrees in Rhode Island

In 2022, the tiny state of Rhode Island was being fueled by imported natural gas. At 84%, this was the largest share of any state. Fortunately, like its New England neighbors, Rhode Island is also incredibly energy efficient. According to the EIA, it consumes the second-lowest amount of energy on a per capita basis. Wind power is an alternative option to gas—the five-turbine Block Island Wind Farm was the first commercial offshore wind farm in the U.S.—but progress has been slow. So you may also see movement around tidal & marine power.

It has a strong interest in Offshore Renewable Energy and its coastal institutes & centers are working with NOAA to analyze the effects of offshore wind energy development. Brown University also launched a new Initiative for Sustainable Energy (ISE) in early 2023 that focuses on renewables, efficiency, and sustainable fuels & materials.
