Vermont has a well-deserved reputation for being lean & green. Even though it consumes a lot more energy than it produces, it still generates almost 100% of in-state electricity from renewable resources. Hydroelectricity is the source of almost half of Vermont’s power—there are ~85 hydroelectric generation facilities operating in the area—but the state is also invested in solar and wind energy. In 2022, it ranked in the top 5 states for energy efficiency, right behind California, Massachusetts & New York. If it can wean itself off wood/biomass and petroleum products for heating, it will be in excellent shape.
You can get involved on the ground by earning an energy-focused degree or certificate from a school in our VT listings. Or you can customize an engineering degree at UVM’s College of Engineering & Mathematical Sciences—faculty have particular interests in Sustainability & Energy and Electrical Energy and Power Systems. Anyone interested in legal & energy policy issues should also check out Vermont Law’s Institute for Energy and the Environment (IEE). It oversees all kinds of fascinating energy projects, organizes international exchanges, and works closely with Vermont communities.
