Despite its size, Delaware is an energy hungry state. Thanks to the presence of major chemical manufacturing and petroleum-refining industries, this little sliver on the Atlantic used nearly 70 times more energy than it produced in 2020. Imported natural gas and coal are the primary sources of its power—in 2021, natural gas fueled 86% of the state’s utility-scale electricity generation.
You can help Delaware break free of its reliance on unsustainable energy imports by choosing one of the DE energy programs in our listings. There are options from the AAS level all the way up to a PhD. Be sure to talk to folks at UD’s Delaware Energy Institute (DEI) about their work on state-specific issues. For example, the Rapid Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment (RAPID) initiative has a special interest in energy issues surrounding chemical manufacturing.
