The industrial juggernaut of the Midwest is the fifth-largest consumer of energy in the nation. But although Illinois has a long history in coal mining & petroleum refining, the state is diversifying its approach. In 2021, the Governor signed off on the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act. This “Clean Energy” legislation calls for renewed investments in nuclear—Illinois generates more electricity from nuclear energy (58%) than any other state—and zero emissions standards for coal, oil & natural gas-fired power plants.
Aspiring energy technicians can use our IL listings to find an energy certificate or AAS degree. Those who prefer a traditional academic path should explore the BS, MS & MEng options. Be sure to ask about research opportunities.
