Utah is a land rich in natural resources, but—as of 2022—over half of its electricity generation was coming from coal-fired power plants. This percentage is dropping, but the state still has a large number of producing oil & natural gas leases on federal lands and five oil refineries within the Salt Lake City area. So a local push for renewables through the Community Renewable Energy Program (CREP) has been facing some headwinds. The good news is that opportunities abound in solar, wind, and—most excitingly—geothermal. Utah already has two geothermal plants in operation.
